The Son of Man Came to Seek Out and to Save the Lost

This meditation is based on a passage for November 24, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 19:1-10

Reflection and Question: Many have observed that Jesus concerned Himself way more with the ethics of plenty and want than with other kinds of morality. This story of Jesus and Zaccheus is another one in which Jesus irritates those around him by engaging with a sinner. Zaccheus was a tax collector and therefore collaborated with the Romans, who most likely exploited his position to extort money and oppress the poor. When Jesus comes to his house, Zaccheus promises to make up for any wrong he has done and Jesus rejoices in this. When were you lost, like Zaccheus, and Jesus found you?

Prayer: Blessed Jesus, each of us is a sinner like Zaccheus. Some of us, also, are trying to see who You are. May we welcome You in and acknowledge our sin, as Zaccheus does, so that You may say of us, as well, “Today salvation has come.” Amen.
